| The baseline expectation of all working directors in today’s effects–laden marketplace is keen visual sense. Truly exceptional directors, however, not only possess a distinct ability to create and utilize stunning imagery, but are also hired for their ability to consistently evoke memorable performances from their actors. To that end, Joe Anthony essentially provides working directors a “gym” to practice the art of directing actors.
From the casting process through the last day of shooting, the director’s ability to guide, inspire and stimulate authentic performances from actors has an unquestionable impact on the overall success of the project. Joe Anthony provides a way for working directors to continue to sharpen their skills in practical ways without the pressure of a professional working situation. He begins by working privately with the director, discussing some of the challenges of working with actors:
- Imagining the performance you want to see, but not being able to get an actor to bring that vision to life in a natural way.
- Keeping performances fresh and authentic despite client requests for take after take.
- Translating client comments/criticisms into useful adjustments for the actors.
- Focusing and inspiring children.
- Making actors comfortable and keeping the environment creative.
Joe Anthony then develops an individualized program for a director based on his/her specific needs and time frame. Drawing from a trusted pool of actors, Joe provides directors practical, “on-your-feet” opportunities to effectively collaborate with professional actors. Recommended exercises may include:
- Script and/or overall project analysis.
- Learning to replace result-oriented direction (be happier/say it faster/etc) with suggestions and questions that evoke true emotion and reaction.
- Conducting mock casting sessions to practice giving clear direction when time is limited and results need to happen quickly.
- Conducting mock rehearsals to give the director a chance to take more time and work on expanding an actor’s performance.
- Project-specific consultations to discuss story and character in order to give the director focus and confidence going into producer meetings or casting sessions.
- On-set consulting available by request, schedule permitting.
